As one of the few remaining areas of Japan where the wilderness truly overtakes the civilisation, Iriomote is a haven for those seeking to get away from it all for a while. Arrival is only possible by boat which lends a romantic air to the island, when you see the rugged peaks and dense jungle approach you from the sea.
Ohara is the main port on the island and the most likely place for you to arrive; this is also the place where most resorts and hotels will arrange to pick you up from. The accommodation on the island is predominantly around the coast as this is where the majority of the population live but it is easy to travel to view the stunning sights inland. Over one-third of the island is classified as a National Park in order to protect the native species, the most endangered of which is the Iriomote Wild Cat.
The Urauchi River is one of the most enjoyable places to spend some time due to its stunning natural beauty and easy access to pleasant cruising but for the more adventurous, there are kayaks available to get lost in this stunning natural wonder.
