Bigeumdo

Part of the Dadohae Marine National Park, Bigeumdo is a popular holiday spot for Korean travellers and families as it is relatively unspoiled and gives a chance to explore Korea minus the swathes of neon. One of the most popular ways to stay on the island is in one of the numerous wooden shacks which are located around the beaches and are fairly easy to find. Although they are of the simple variety, you get to sleep on the beach and what could be better than that?

The beaches are lovely and large so you shouldn’t have too many problems with finding a nice space to position yourself to catch some sun and/or waves. There is also a smaller, heart-shaped sea inlet with a beach which is popular with Korean romantics and young couples in love. The island is especially popular as a weekend retreat so if you don’t have to be back to work on Monday and can stay for a few days more, you will notice a fairly marked difference in the character of the island when the pace slows down midweek. There are a number of interesting historical sights on the island if that is your sort of thing with Seongchisanseong Fortress being of particular interest.
