Ulleungdo

A source of immense national pride for Koreans, Ulleungdo is viewed as being the ultimate Korean vacation island due to its famous seafood (predominantly squid and cuttlefish) and the remarkable scenery. The waters can be remarkably clear and the rugged outcrops and hills make for wonderful hiking and walking territory; the Nari ‘Bunji’ Basin is a flattened caldera where it is also possible to walk and observe the locals cultivating plants.

Accommodation is easily accessible and available on the island and there is a wide variety of hotels and guesthouses to stay in, all easily arranged when you arrive on the island. Yaksu Park is famed for its therapeutic waters and every journey to the island should involve a ride on the cable car as its views of the whole island and the mountain of Seonginbong are remarkable. If extreme heights are not your thing then it is possible to ascend the Dodong lighthouse and view a great deal of the island from a lesser height. For the less adventurous there are inexpensive bus tours which can be arranged and take 4 hours to see the length of the island. It is also possible and worthwhile to visit the disputed islets of Dokdo. Claimed by both Japan and Korea, transport can be arranged from Ulleungdo.
