Penghu Island

A beautiful and traditional island located in the Penghu archipelago, the main island of Penghu is home to some beautiful beaches and temples. The majority of the ancient temples (including the oldest, Tihanou Temple which is over 375 years old) are located in the city of Makung. As most of the accommodation is located here, Makung is also an ideal base for exploring the rest that the island has to offer.

The remarkable beaches are not what you would expect from a Chinese island with crystal clear, turquoise waters and pleasant tropical sands but Lintou beach is exactly that, with all of the amenities that you would hope for.

Other points of interest on the island are the masses of temples dedicated to the sea goddess Matsu with many of the nicer temples located in the small fisherman’s villages dotted around the island. The islands have a wonderful tropical climate so the weather is generally very good, although it can be poor during the summer due to regular tornadoes so it’s best check ahead to ensure that it is safe to travel.
The accommodation on the island is predominantly of the hotel and guesthouse variety and is best arranged in advance as Penghu is a popular holidaying place for people from nearby islands. It is possible to travel to the other islands of the archipelago by arranging a trip with one of the many fishermen whose sole trade is now to act as a tour guide for tourists.
