Bruny Island was named after the first European to land, French Admiral, Bruny D’Encetastreaux. The island could nearly be classed as two with north and south only connected by a narrow strip of land.
Although small and with a population of only about 500 there is still plenty to see and do. See the penguins and muttonbirds which frequent the area, take a camel tour or go swimming at North Bruny. On South Bruny there is Adventure Bay Coastal Reserve where swimming is also good.
There are several state reserves where there are bushwalking trails as well as mountain biking and horseriding. Waterfall Creek State Forest is well worth a look. The Bligh Museum has some good exhibits and historical documents and maps as well as much Aboriginal material and artifacts. This area provides not only beautiful scenery but a nature and history lesson at once. Located in the Kingsborough Municipality a ferry service runs up to nine times daily.
