Mounu Island

At around £100 per night you can enjoy staying in one of only four ‘fales’, or traditional Tongan houses, each facing onto the beach and distanced from each other enough that you can feel as though you are on your own private island.

The food cooked in the restaurant is wonderful, fresh-from-the-sea and the resort can also arrange fishing trips to see the remarkable vibrancy of the waters. This is also a great place to try kiteboarding due to the strong trade winds that exist here, but the reason that many people come here is due to the remarkable whale watching season between June and October. Many humpback whales choose to mate here due to the calm waters and the owners of the resort arrange trips to watch, and perhaps even snorkel with, the gentle giants for a remarkably memorable experience. It is occasionally possible to spot whales from the beach whilst sipping a cocktail and what could be better than that?
