With over 2.1 million inhabitants, Havana is the capital city of Cuba. Once the playground for the rich and famous celebrities of the era from Sinatra to Hemingway came to the island for some R&R. The communist party had a profound impact on the city and Havana has struggled to keep up with neighboring countries economically. For this reason in particular, many travelers find the city rather charming and unchanged from the days of old. Recent moves to encourage tourism are changing Havana toward the direction of its Caribbean neighbors, however the city has a long way to go and many would prefer it stay the way it is.
