Beyond the resorts that are strung along the Dominican Republic’s coast is a land of mountain peaks, rural villages, sugar plantations and urban city life. If you are an avid adventure seeker you are in for a treat. At Cabarete in the north the winds are perfect for windsurfing and kitesurfing while the mountain peaks are waiting for you to try beat them. For a city escape Santo Domingo is the cultural, cobble-stoned heart of this country while smaller villages are not far away. Or drink cafĂ© at the Peninsula de Samaná while watching for whales. Party animals shouldn’t miss the annual La Vega carnival.
