Beyond the resorts that are strung along the Dominican Republic’s coast is a land of mountain peaks, rural villages, sugar plantations and urban city life. If you are an avid adventure seeker you are in for a treat. At Cabarete in the north the winds are perfect for windsurfing and kitesurfing while the mountain peaks are waiting for you to try beat them. For a city escape Santo Domingo is the cultural, cobble-stoned heart of this country while smaller villages are not far away. Or drink café at the Peninsula de Samaná while watching for whales. Party animals shouldn’t miss the annual La Vega carnival.
