Leeward Islands

Situated in the Caribbean Sea is the French territory of Guadeloupe. Shaped like a 1½ winged butterfly, the main ‘island’ is, in fact, two islands: Grand Terre (Great Land) to the east and Basse Terre (Low Land) to the west, which are separated by the navigable Riviere Salee (Salt River).

This territory also includes the nearby smaller islands of Marie Galante and Desirade, and the tiny island groups of Iles des Saintes and Petite Terre, as well as the the French sides of St Barts and St Martin, which are further away and have a more international ‘flavour’.

The Guadeloupe National Park was established in 1970 and, today, is considered a marine protected area.  It is also well worth a visit as an international biosphere reserve.

Tourists will enjoy the scenery and all that it offers them, with lush rainforest, a sparkling waterfall and pond, a zoo and botanical gardens. Guadeloupe also has a volcano called Soufriere, a rum museum and a working sugar factory, as well as white sand beaches and natural diving spots. The main languages spoken here are French and Creole, and, as you can imagine, the local cuisine is superb!
