Vieques has remained relatively untouched by tourism due to it being an American military base for many years and although this conjures images of an unattractive landscape filled with functional buildings it couldn’t be further from the truth. The island itself is stunning and once you experience the beautiful beaches you will forget all about the militaristic past as the lack of tourist development over the years has led to a wonderful atmosphere. There are a number of historic places of interest as well, including a small Stonehenge-esque structure built by the Taino Indians and a wonderful Spanish fort. Some of the US Military facilities have recently been opened up to visitors and they can make for an interesting day out.
The main reason for people coming to Vieques, however, is for the wondrous inlet known as Mosquito Bay. At night, millions of bioluminescent and miniscule creatures glow when disturbed in the water, creating a strange ethereal light. Vieques has a wealth of accommodation to suit every need, whether you prefer a luxury villa or simple B&B you will get value regardless of what you pay. A wonderful and idyllic place to stay is on Esperanza Beach as the waters are beautifully clear and the beach is one of the best on the island.
