A veritable tropical paradise that is only 21 miles from Belize City, Caye Caulker is famed for its remarkable atmosphere and world class diving although there is plenty here for everyone to enjoy. The island is also important as a cultural home to numerous Caribbean ethnic groups such as the Mayans, the Creole and the Mestizo and as such is a fascinating place to visit to experience the amazing cultural mishmash. Caye Caulker has become a favourite with backpackers due to the wonderful, cheap accommodation and inexpensive living. This lends the island an amazingly rustic feel with many of the bars and cafes being beach huts, exactly what you would hope for.
The main reason for so many people to come to the island is to visit the world famous Blue Water Hole, a 400ft deep, perfectly cylindrical hole in the Belize Barrier Reef that houses many different species of fish and sharks. It is a fascinating dive for those of all experience levels. If you are less interested in the water then you may enjoy the forest reserve that is on the island or a trip to one of the nearby Mayan ruins.
