It’s famed for its point breaks at Punta Roca but the real El Salvador is in the active volcanoes, dense forests and shimmering lakes. The country is best seen by foot. Hike the ridges and cool down in the river pools of Parque Nacional el Imposible or take to the western highlands along Ruta de las Flores with its hot springs. Meander through small colonial towns such as Suchitoto and Alegria or follow the trail of museums, memorials and music in the capital San Salvador. Finally, give your feet a rest and kick back on Playa el Tunco in the southwest.
