Losinj

Losinj is a beautiful island on the Kvarner gulf that is famous for as a traditional sample of Croatian life. The whitewashed houses and quaint seaside charms have led to the island becoming famous for its healthy air and as a spa retreat for the wealthy. Located in the Bay of Kvarner, the town of Mali Losinj is where most of the accommodation and restaurants are located and this is an ideal spot as the seafood is fresh from the boat. The lushness of the island means that it is possible to have a nature walk in the forest a fairly short walk from the town centre.

Given the peaceful setting it is surprising to learn that this island was home to some hard fighting between the Wehrmacht and Croatian forces during WWII. After the war the Italian population left to be replaced by Croats from the mainland but there is still a population of Italian speakers and an Italian-language newletter for those who had previously lived here. Cikat Bay is the area that most tourists will flock to due to the beach and the good range of watersports available, which includes windsurfing. There is also a famous ‘good’ dolphin that lives close to the island and occasionally swims with people. It is only possible to arrive by the ferry from the mainland from Rijeka and this is an inexpensive and beautiful way to see much of the coastline.
