Fasta Aland is the largest island in this Finnish archipelago, it is also the municipal capital and home to the vast majority of the population. One of the strange and unexpected elements that you will discover on a visit here is that although technically part of Finland the inhabitants speak Swedish due to actually being located only 40 miles away from the Swedish coast.
Of the wide variety of things to do one of the most popular is to take part in a boat tour around some of the closer islets and sights of the archipelago such as Kastelholm Castle which is located 25km to the north of Mariehamn and was once home to a number of Kings and Queens. Given the grandeur of the history the building may seem a little modest but it is still in a very beautiful part of the country and is part of a wonderful tour. In Mariehamn, the Marine Quarter is a wonderful journey back in time to the era of the high-seas. There are still many shipbuilders resident here and if interested in history then you can visit a small museum located here. There are a number of local delicacies, such as Aland Pancakes, that you can try here in the hearty cafes and restaurants as well as some local beer and vodka at the end of the day.
