Arles is best known for its well preserved Roman arena in the centre of town. At one time it was a major trading centre and has many medieval and roman monuments all over town. Arles celebrates bullfighting in the arena and its location near the Camargue means this is a way of life. Van Gogh also came to Arles and painted The Starry Night here as well as The Sunflowers. With excellent local restaurants and some colourful shops Arles captures the spirit of the South of France and is a delight to visit.
