Avignon

Famous for the bridge in the song, Avignon was once home to the Pope and is a beautiful historical city in Provence. Surrounded by medieval walls and with huge museums celebrating art and history Avignon makes a great place to explore and was a favourite of many famous artists.  The Palais des Papes is a popular attraction here as is the Pont St Benezet which only stretches halfway across the river should anyone want to dance on it. Avignon has a great local market and there are excellent restaurants serving fresh cuisine typical of Provence.
