Set in a magnificent natural harbour Brest has played a major part in many periods of history. Dominated by the fifteenth century castle it is the base for the French Atlantic Fleet and the National Maritime Museum is an interesting attraction in the city. One of the newest places to visit just outside Brest is Oceanopolis, the largest aquarium in Europe. Brest is a good base to explore the rest of Brittany with beautiful beaches nearby, the Crozon Peninsula, good local cuisine with food and produce markets, and a unique character all of its own.
