Carcassonne

The perfect introduction to the historic Cathar strongholds, Carcassonne is a beautiful fortified city. This is where the Cathars ruled until being tried and executed and where the streets have a real charm leading to the walled part of the Cite from the Ville. The inner fortress of the Chateau Comtal can be visited and there are wonderful markets most days in Carcassonne. Nearby the Canal du Midi runs through the city and is a popular architectural monument in the area. With good food and some excellent restaurants in town Carcassonne is one of the best places to visit in France.
