Ile Sainte-Marguerite

This tiny island, located not far from Cannes in France, is a wonderful place to spend a day. With beautiful forests and rocky beaches it is a popular picnicking spot on a nice day. Ile St. Marguerite is most famous for being the location of the jail cell that held The Man in the Iron Mask which can still be visited for free in the beautiful Fort Royal, which also houses a small aquarium and museum with Roman remains.

The port area where you arrive from Cannes or Nice is the hub of activity on the island, bars and restaurants abound in this small town but a popular and pleasant way to feed yourself here is to bring a picnic. The forest on the island is wonderful for walking through as you really get to see the remarkable lushness which used to cover the whole island but which was cut back to allow the locals to cultivate the land. Many people come here on a boat trip to the rest of the beautiful Lerins Islands, this can be booked with ease from the mainland. The “Plateau du Mileu” surrounds the island and is very popular with sailors.
