La Rochelle

Considered the most attractive seaside town in France La Rochelle has a long history of being a major port on the West coast of France. The Rue du Palais is an excellent place to shop with its backdrop of eighteenth century houses. It is the Vieux Port that holds the real charm of the city with the quays and historic towers. The city has a maritime museum and galleries celebrating the arts, great restaurants and bars all over town, and is the perfect base for further exploration in the area, perhaps to Royan, the Ile de Re, or Cognac.
