Marseille

The most populated city after Paris, Marseille is the city that gave France its national anthem, La Marseillaise. This is a very down to earth port city with a wonderful old town and harbour area full of interesting little cafes selling local cuisine. Le Panier is in the centre of Old Marseille and has a rich history associated with it. There are beaches in and around Marseille and the cornice which are popular, and just off the coast the Chateau d’If is the jail setting for the Count of Monte Cristo.
