Metz lies on the eastern bank of the Moselle River and dates back to Roman times when it was part of a major trading route. Most of the original French quarters of the town are located round the cathedral and there are many historic buildings and monuments all over the town. Museums include the Art and History which has works by Delacroix, and many people climb the hill of Ste Croix to see the Italianate streets. Metz has an excellent shopping centre and some great local restaurants with regional specialties including locally produced wines.
