Once at the heart of the industrial core of Germany, Bochum is now a vibrant and party going town in the Ruhr area. The German Mining Museum in Bochum is a reminder of its past connections with coal. The rebirth of this city occurred when the mines closed and it turned into a culture centre largely brought about by Ruhr University and the Bochum Schauspielhaus with theatre and other art work, and the Zeiss Planetarium is a major attraction in the city. The city now has some prominent cultural events here and Bochum Total is one of Europe’s biggest Rock Festivals.
