One of the oldest cities in Europe Magdeburg is a Hanseatic port and the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt. Otto the Great, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 962 was so in love with the city that he gave it to his wife as a gift. Today Magdeburg is also associated with the scientist Otto von Guericke who gave his name to the university and the city has a museum in his honour. Magdeburg is characterized by the famous Horseman in the city centre near the cathedral and by having some of the best currywurst restaurants in Germany, and the Hassel Night Line Festival is not to be missed.
