The nautical atmosphere of Rostock shapes the town, one which is proud of its maritime culture and heritage. Hanse sail in August each year attracts thousands of visitors and the regenerated harbour with restaurants and shops is very popular. The red brick buildings date from Hanseatic times and there are more modern architectural gems all over town. These include the Hyparschalen buildings built in the 1960s and the more modern Max Planck Institute near the harbour. For food aficionados this is the place to find fresh fish, and is also an established centre of excellence for chocolate complete with bars and cafes to enjoy the atmosphere.
