Lefkada

Historically important and achingly beautiful Lefkada, or Lefkas as it is alternatively known, is one of the main reasons for people believing that the Greek isles are amongst the most beautiful in the world. The scene of many a Greek tragedy and believed by some to have been the mythical island of Ithaca, Lefkada is awash with history and stunning views of the surrounding sea and nearby Kefalonia. The island is also a fun, all-action adventure waiting to happen if you are interested in watersports or rock-climbing and wind surfing is hugely popular due to the remarkable crosswinds.

Vasiliki Town and Lefkada Town are the two most popular places to stay as the apartments are cheap and the amenities are plentiful, but if you are looking for somewhere a little more secluded then head for Karyotes not far from Lefkada Town. The traditional food, including fresh souvlaki and mezes, on the island is wonderful and goes perfectly with a wine produced on the island that every visitor has to visit at least once. “Lefkadian Land Wine” as it is called, has a distinctive flavour and can be bought cheaply around the island.
