Ancona dates back to the 5th century and is a large port with ferries to Croatia and Greece. Although the town was heavily bombed in World War two the medieval Loggia dei Mercanti survived and is one of the most interesting buildings in town. There are a number of museums celebrating the archaeological past in Ancona and a good traditional market. Nearby the Grotte di Frasassi is a magnificent underground cavern with wonderful rock formations. The local wine, Verdicchio, is produced near Jesi and is perfect for accompanying some of the local specialties served in Ancona’s restaurants.
