Assisi

Assisi is most famous for its patron saint who was beatified for his kindness towards the poor. The basilica where he is buried is a magnificent structure which dominates the town and has art work by some of the greatest Italian painters including Giotto, Pietro Lorenzetti and Cimabue. Vast numbers of pilgrims visit the Basilica of St Francis of Assisi each year and there are several lovely cafes and restaurants around town. The town has many examples of renaissance and gothic architecture and is a beautiful place in Umbria with a lot to see and do in the region.
