Capri

This island located close to Naples and in the Mediterranean Sea is legendary for its beauty and debauched nightlife. It was famed all over the ancient world as home to many a Roman emperor and was nicknamed by the Greeks as the Island of Sirens. The island is now host to many festivals and is the starting point for the Capri-Naples Swimming Marathon, one of the most challenging swimming contests in the world. Although home to many exceptionally wealthy Italians, the island is also affordable for those with a budget as there are a great number of cheap accommodation options on offer in and around the main town of Capri.

Due to the island being a haven for the rich, it can be expensive when eating out but there are also a number of smaller food stalls and supermarkets located in and around the central piazza. One of the most famous caves in the world is located on the coast of the island. Called The Blue Grotto and used by Roman emperors as a spa, it is a sight to behold with its wondrous blue waters and an entrance so small that you have to lie down as your boat glides in. There is also a famous Villa that was built by the emperor Tiberius which can be visited for a few Euros and offers remarkable views over the coast and the Mediterranean below. The island is also famous for celebrity spotting in and around the central piazza as this is home to some of the best restaurants and shops on the island. There are a number of beaches which line the coast of the island as well but it is best to take care when swimming as the tides can be very strong in this part of the Mediterranean.
