Catania, destroyed by an earthquake in 1693, has been largely rebuilt and contains some very creative Baroque designs constructed from lava blocks. The Piazza del Duomo has a lava elephant as a feature and offers dramatic views of nearby Mount Etna. In town the composer Bellini is celebrated at the Museo Belliniano and there are a number of beautiful churches all over town with interesting facades. With a good food market selling local produce this is a great place to explore or relax in a café and watch the locals go about their business.
