Elba

If you enjoy scrambling across rocks to find tiny secluded beaches and bays and then swimming in remarkably clear, warm waters with no one else in sight then this is the island for you. If your adventurous spirit lies under the sea then there is plenty to keep you occupied as well with calm bays, year-round warm waters and sandbanks with plenty of fish. It is possible to see Morays, Barracuda and Giant Tuna Fish in action, with the occasional dolphin thrown in for good luck. Elba is popular for hiking in the early hours of the day before the midday sun reaches its peak when the locals retire to a shady café to sip grappa. There are a variety of restaurants serving local food, which is predominantly seafood and is famed in the region for its wonderful flavour. It is possible to rent a dream Italian villa on the island for a reasonable price in Capo Sant Andrea or in the area around Portoferraio there are numerous beautiful hotels. Regularly featuring in lists of the Top Ten Islands in the Mediterranean, Elba is a wonderful gem that will keep you coming back.
