The Island of Lipari is the largest of the Aeolian Islands and is home to some of the best views in the region. The town of Lipari is also the only accommodation and tourism hub, as the rest of the islands are generally only visited as part of a day-trip as they are easily accessible by boat. The island range consists of seven volcanic peaks, although only two are still active, which gives the islands a wonderfully rugged form, ideal for walks of all kinds as it is possible to get stunning views with even a short walk from town. One of the most popular activities is to rent a boat at night to view the active volcanoes bubbling in the dark and occasionally spitting lava but don’t worry, the boats don’t go that close!
Located near Sicily, and in particular the famous town of Messina, these are the accessible points where it is possible to arrive from and depart to. A must-see is the town’s Archaeological Museum which has a remarkable number of ancient artefacts available and most were dredged up from shipwrecks found off the coast. The islands are also famous for the natural, hot mud baths which dot the coast, giving visitors a wonderful, natural spa in which to unwind as well as the fumaroles which are a little out at sea.
