Lucca’s street plan is very Roman in design and the 16th and 16th century ramparts block out most of the traffic making it a beautiful city to explore on foot. One of the town’s many Romanesque churches, san Michele, is on the site of the old Roman Forum and there is a house dedicated to the life of Puccini who was born in Lucca. The Piazza Napoleone is a good place to shop and explore some of the pavement cafes and Lucca’s beautiful Duomo is well worth a visit in this historic town.
