Matera is perched on the edge of a deep ravine and has a busy upper section and a silent lower cave section. This makes it one of the most interesting cities in Southern Italy. The Strada Panoramica dei Sassi gives the best views and where visitors can look down into the caves which provided refuge to monks. There are several chapels gouged out of the rocks and some were even used as living quarters. On the upper side of the town there are lovely old streets and decorative churches, museums and shops making it a wonderful town to explore.
