Pompeii perished when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79 sending clouds of ash and smoke into the town and immortalising the inhabitants into volcanic statues. The city was discovered in the 16th century with serious excavation beginning a hundred years later and today it is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world. Visitors can see streets, living quarters and mummified bodies in the positions they died in at Pompeii and the archaeological museum houses locally found treasures. For a walk through a town frozen in time Pompeii is a famous and very interesting place to experience.
