Salerno is a busy port in southern Italy. At one time it was famous for its medical school but is now visited mostly for the Duomo which was constructed in the 11th century. The atrium is the best feature as its columns originally came from the ancient Greek site of Paestum a short drive away. Local Roman archaeological finds can be seen in the Museo Provinciale. The food in Southern Italy reflects the Mediterranean climate and there are a number of good local restaurants in town and places to stay. This is a great place to sit in a small café and watch the world go by and to taste some of the delicious local seafood. Nearby, the Cilento is a mountainous region south of Salerno with a quiet coastline including the small resort of Agropoli.
