San Gimignano’s skyline features the famous thirteen towers built by nobility in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. This was a town on the main pilgrim route from Europe to Rome which built wealth here until the plague of 1348 diverted the route. The old narrow streets and quaint buildings are a delight to explore with interesting local shops. There are walks in the nearby hills, beautifully preserved architecture and a real air of timelessness in this small town. This is a place to escape the visiting crowds in nearby Florence and spend time in a café soaking up the Tuscan hospitality.
