Taranto

There is very little remaining of the ancient Spartan city of Taras, originally on this site in 708BC. Today Taranto is an industrial town with a good archaeological museum and a picturesque coastline. This city was once famous for shellfish and today the fish market is one of the best around. Taranto’s Citta Vecchia is an island dividing the Mare Piccolo from the Mare Grande and was once the Roman citadel. The city Duomo has an intriguing catacomb like crypt and another place to explore is the castle built by Frederick of Aragon which covers the corner of the Citta Vecchia in this charming town.
