Once a favourite resort of the Romans, Tivoli is a popular day trip from Rome. At one time temples covered the hills and the hot springs were used as baths and for healing. The most famous sight in town is the Villa d’Este which is a magnificent country residence created in the 16th century for Cardinal Ippolito d’Este. The gardens give a perspective on how this place must have looked in the Cardinal’s time. Hadrian’s Villa is around 5km west of Tivoli and one of the most spectacular villas built in the Roman Empire.
