Torcello

Torcello was founded in the 5th and 6th centuries and is one of the islands in the Venice Lagoon. It has the oldest building in the Lagoon itself, the cathedral of Santa Maria dell’Assunta which is renowned for its fabulous mosaics. The canals and historic buildings give an idea of what Torcello was during the Byzantine age with carved columns and domes. The church of Santa Fosca has a beautiful Byzantine interior and portico. Just a short vaporetto ride from Venice, this historic town is a major archaeological site in Italy and is simply breathtaking to visit.
