This is a wonderful place to spend a number of hours walking in the wilds as there is a remarkable variety of landscapes which can aid the feeling of awe and isolation. There is a great deal of history in this area with numerous whaling stations serving as a reminder but the greatest aspect is the unknown, finding areas of the island and discovering some wonderful wildlife, although you must be aware of the polar bears! In fact, everyone leaving the settlement is required to carry a gun for self defence and is required to shoot any Polar Bear that may appear violent. The islands are also a popular place to go for whale spotting and bird watching due to the huge swathes of migratory animals that pass by here.
The northernmost tip of Europe and the most northerly inhabited island in the world, Spitsbergen is the capital of the region and the only island in the archipelago that has any major centre. Accommodation is based in Longyearbyen and there is a variety of options on offer, there are nice hotels and also the option, for the brave, of camping. The Svalbard Gallery is an interesting way to see artist’s impressions of this incredible landscape.
