Located close to Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean, the small island of Porto Santo is a tropical haven for those who want to escape the maddening throngs of tourists but still be able to lie on a fantastic beach. The town of Camacha is the main tourist hub and the location of most of the hotels on the island and is also where you arrive from the airport. The island is essentially one 9km long beach and as fewer visitors come here than Madeira you will not struggling for space, it is very easy to find a secluded and peaceful spot.
Porto Santo is also famous for an interesting interlude in its history where Christopher Columbus married and lived on the island for a brief while before setting off on his reputed adventures. The house that his first wife previously owned is now the location of the Christopher Columbus Museum which is a wonderful way to spend a few hours. If you enjoy being active then there is also a fun 18-hole golf course on the island, which can easily be enjoyed after a relaxing horse ride through the interior of the island.
