The Azores are a small chain of islands in the Atlantic which were once at the centre of world trade and laden with riches, the islands are now a little less affluent but still a wonderful place to visit and sun yourself. The centre of historical trade was the island of Terceira, with the UNESCO protected town of Angra de Heriosmo being the focal point and as such there is a vast quantity of fascinating areas to visit. There is a remarkable fort which was hugely fortified to prevent raids from pirates which is now an expensive hotel and spa complex.
One of the most interesting, and brave, activities on the island is the tourada à corda, a highly dangerous form of bullfight where a tethered bull is released into the town square and teased by participants until the rope breaks. If you aren’t so interested in potentially being mauled, there are other activities that you can enjoy such as windsurfing, fishing and sailing. Although walking around this glorious island paradise tends to be enough for most visitors. There is a fantastic caldera that is a reasonable walk from the town centre which offers remarkable views of the island.
