Avila is special for two reasons. The perfectly preserved eleventh century walls surrounding the town give it a dramatic appearance, and Saint Teresa, a mystic writer, was born in Avila and there are a number of shrines dedicated to her. The town sees many pilgrims and set on a high plain with the backdrop of the Sierra de Gredos, Avila has a really dramatic appearance, particularly with its eighty eight towers. With some good local restaurants and a wide variety of hotels this is a good stop over en route to other towns in the area.
