Gernika

Gernika is forever immortalised in the painting by Picasso which depicts the tragedy of this town. On April 27th 1937 more than 1600 people were killed I 4 hours by a saturation bombing raid aimed at blasting the soul out of Basque resistance during the Spanish Civil War. Today the town is the heart of the Basque Nationalism movement and the parliament building at Casa de las Juntas is worth a visit for the stained glass window. Around 5km from Gernika there are caves with prehistoric paintings which are popular with visitors to the area.
