Merida is the old capital of the Roman province of Lusitania and was the final stop on an ancient Roman road. There are several Roman remains in town which attract visitors. One of the best sights is the Puente Romano, a historic Roman bridge. The nearby Alcazaba was built by the Moors. In town the Roman amphitheatre is a venue for outdoor plays in summer and is one of the best preserved theatres in the world. The aqueducts just outside town and the Mithraeo Villa are also very popular visitor attractions in Merida.
