The strong fortifications of the historic town of Zamora led to it being called “la bien cercada” or “the closed one” in medieval romances. The town is spread out on the slopes of the River Duero and has many beautiful old buildings. Most churches date from the twelfth century and from the time when El Cid led campaigns against the Moors. The most striking building in town is the magnificent cathedral and Zamora is also known for its collection of Flemish tapestries. With some good cafes this is an interesting town to explore and soak up the atmosphere.
