This rocky mass in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean is one of the most charming and beguiling islands in the world. The island is a mass of contradictions and extremes with huge, cold peaks and glorious tropical waters. The harshness of the landscape is striking and unbelievably beautiful, leaving visitors in awe of nature and those who live and work here.
All of the inhabitants of Ascension Island are employees of the various companies who mine here, or the Air Forces of America and Britain, as there is no indigenous population which adds to the strangeness. It is only possible to visit the island with the permission of the local Administrator and this must be sought at least 28 days before arriving.
The surrounding waters are very popular for deep-sea fishing and diving as they are home to tuna of remarkable size but if you are looking for other activities then there will be plenty to occupy you such as golf, football and squash. The golf course is widely regarded as being one of the worst in the world due to the volcanic rock and oily sand used to form it, but it will certainly test any players golfing ability, especially due to the extreme winds that you find on the island.
