Northern Ireland Travel Secrets

Emerging from years as a trouble spot, Northern Ireland is one of the best kept secrets in the United Kingdom and its natural beauty will ensure visitors return again and again.

Beyond Belfast

Most people visiting Northern Ireland arrive in Belfast which is dominated by the great Harland and Wolff Shipyards, famous for constructing the Titanic. Local people in Belfast rightly commemorate their association with the history of this famous ship and when asked about the Titanic they are clear to say, “She was alright when she left us.” The city also prides itself on regeneration following the Troubles and whereas going out in the evening was a real challenge there is now a vibrant feel to Belfast with new restaurants and businesses opening all the time.

In Belfast it is common to be asked to share a taxi, particularly at the airport, as there are shortages on occasions. The drivers will work out the fares and get everyone to their destination, and visitors should just go with the flow. Taxi sharing is also common in areas like Falls Road where many drivers are ex political prisoners and provide a service into the city very much like a bus but as an alternative to this form of transport as a lot of bus companies would not service the area during the Troubles and the taxis have continued. Having used the cabs here the drivers and locals have always been courteous and helpful, making sure I knew where I was going, even with my British accent, and often recommending places to see.

Some people never leave Belfast, there is a lot to explore and experience in the city but there is also much to see around Northern Ireland. With some of the best coastline in Europe, peaceful lakelands and hills perfect for hiking getting outside the city and seeing the rest of Northern Ireland is a must. The lakes of County Fermanagh are an undiscovered gem of a place to spend time, particularly around Enniskillen where the sailing is superb. Driving along the Antrim Coast is another wonderful experience with stunning coastal scenery and ruined castles and charming seaside villages. Hiring a car is recommended as public transport is very limited in Northern Ireland and having a vehicle gives a lot more flexibility to a visit.

A few words on politics

Northern Ireland has been at the centre of politics for decades and there is now a real focus on reconciliation. Most decent people living in Northern Ireland wish to move on from the past. It is best to avoid talk of politics whilst in Northern Ireland unless they are open with you as you can never be sure of anyone’s personal experiences. The subject of the Troubles is very sensitive and a lot of people do not like to air their feelings in public as they have spent years in a political divide.

Clothing can also cause issues and it is best to avoid combinations of red, white and blue, or green, orange and white as they can convey the wrong meaning to people if you happen to be in a neighbourhood with strong political feelings. July can be a challenging time to visit as the Marching Season results in road blocks and closures, and a lot of locals take holidays themselves. For those who find the parades of interest this is clearly a time to go.

Using names such as Londonderry instead of Derry or Derry instead of Londonderry are not likely to cause offence as people generally understand the dilemma faced by visitors.
