Somerset Travel Secrets

Deep in the Quantock Hills local farmers know where to spot red deer. It’s all a matter of taking things more slowly, driving with care and walking on the footpaths quietly. This sums up Somerset as a laid back county and one to enjoy, just like observing red deer in the wild. Red deer like to be watched and observing them in their natural habitat at dusk is a magical part of visiting rural Somerset.

Inspirational Somerset

Somerset has inspired many writers and the dramatic beauty of Exmoor is associated with Lorna Doone. Visiting some of the areas linked to the classic novel is an excellent way to see the very best of the county. Porlock Weir is one famous site and Badgeworthy Water Valley with its rhododendron bushes are spectacular places to see. The area is famous for walking and one of the best ways to see Exmoor in its full glory is to go out on a hike. Some local farmers enjoy autumn and see this as the best time to visit the county, not just for the cider harvests and the colours of the leaves, but the roar of the stags during the rutting season stirs many visitors to Somerset and places like Exmoor and the Quantocks.

Carnival

Most people associate Somerset with cheese and cider production but as the autumn arrives the county towns begin to celebrate with carnivals. These are known as some of the largest illuminated processions in the world and are spectacular to see. Intriguingly they remain a relatively well kept secret in Somerset and are enjoyed by those in the know. All around this part of the world are dedicated carnival clubs who design the illuminated floats which go on to entertain crowds through the autumn evenings in towns from Bridgewater to Minehead.

Watch a cricket match

Cricket is popular in most towns and villages in Somerset and an afternoon spent watching a match is a most enjoyable way to pass time in this beautiful part of England and visitors made most welcome. With county matches in Taunton and most villages having a team there will be something on most weekends in summer.

For most people Somerset is a place they pass through to get to Devon or Cornwall and many have heard of Glastonbury and Cheddar Gorge. Somerset has so much more to offer and is a real secret in itself just waiting to be discovered.
